Overview

**This course is only for YMCA staff and YMCA job applicants. You may be asked which branch you are applying to work for or which aquatics director is interviewing you.**

This training is a blended learning class and provides the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification.  After completion of this course, Instructors will be able to identify components of the YMCA Swim Lessons continuum, demonstrate the behaviors of an effective YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor and maintain an inclusive environment of learning while keeping order in a positive and safe environment.  Swim Instructors will learn to employ swim teaching techniques that breakdown the critical features of a swimmers skill progression at any age and level.  In addition Instructors will demonstrate their role in the safety process and during an emergency.

 

Prerequisites to the Swim Instructor in-person sessions:

  • CPR-Pro, Oxygen and First Aid (blended, eLearning and in-person)
  • Principles of Youth Development (eLearning)
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor: Orientation (eLearning)
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor: Observe and Communicate (eLearning)

 

Skill Assessment needed for completion:

  • Proficiency in 4 of the 6 basic swim strokes (25 yards each)
    1. Front Crawl
    2. Breaststroke
    3. Sidestroke
    4. Butterfly
    5. Elementary Backstroke
    6. Backstroke

       

  • Tread Water for 2 minutes showing proficiency in:          
    1. Whip kick
    2. Scissor kick

       

  • Passing teaching assessment
  • Basic water safety skills
  • 80% or better on written test
